How did the challenge come about?
In browsing other artists on Facebook, I came across first one, then two and then three talented artists who had set themselves the challenge of completing 100 paintings in 100 days for under £100.... I became fascinated not only in watching their work as it was uploaded every evening, but in how this constant practice developed and strengthened their individual techniques........
I find that when working on commissioned pieces, I become a copyist working closely from a photograph. Experimentation and the ability to creatively evolve a piece of art is not the remit...... the more I thought about it, the more I became convinced that this challenge would open up some areas of my artistic practice that had been relatively dormant since being an art student (many moons ago! )....... I decided on May 1st, 2011, that I would take up the challenge and try to produce a body of work over 100 days. I completed on the 9th of August. Below is a small selection from the 100 pieces.
I didn't know how I would feel after this mammoth undertaking, but it has left me with more confidence in my colour, better tonal differentiation and a zest for 'getting on with it'........ I'm so glad I challenged myself, though looking back, it at times became so difficult to maintain the momentum.......
I also discovered what was my ulitmate inspiration; the play of strong light over the horses form and blue shadows !

10 x 14" Atelier Interactive on canvas panel
The beginning of the 100 day journey! I chose this piece to paint because of the strong colours on the grey mare and the lovely feeling of depth into the background.
DAY 100 - The Ice Maiden

The last of the 100 paintings! This piece encompasses all I love; the strong play of light on the horse, long blue cast shadows and subtle detailing.......
